Old Deptford High Street

News Shopper has published some old photos of Deptford High Street which have been dug out by BBC researchers working on a documentary about the high street for a series to be broadcast next year.

Unfortunately the image quality on the website is not great, so it's difficult to get an accurate idea of the exact locations; I particularly like the one of H Wellbeloved's shop although it is somewhere on the high street rather than Bill's current shop at the bottom of Tanner's Hill.

Wellbeloved Butchers..
1914 PO directory lists a "W.H.Wellbeloved Butcher" at 15a
High St. N0.15 was a Tailors shop.
I have compared the windows in the photo with the windows of No.15 as it is now (via Google Earth) They look the same to me both have distinct features.Just a thought.

I've got a copy of an OS map (1894). It lists a Wm Beloved, butcher at No 15 and a Phillip Beck, "china dealer" at 15a.

Wellbeloved PPS...
PO Directory 1882 gives his address as No.15
PO Directory 1915 sayes 13A.
Looks as if this confusion of the numbering system rather than 2 shops,
but who knows?

Hi there

The picture was donated to us by the Wellbeloved family last year who kindly also allowed us to use it in the News Shopper article. It's where the Orient Chinese restaurant is now based. Great pic isn't it!
