New (coffee!) shop on the High Street

The 'Off Licence Station Shop' at 142 Deptford High Street, just south of the train station, had its facade and new sign installed last year some time, but its promise of mobile top-ups, travel cards and groceries was yet to materialise.

For the last few days work has been going on inside the shop; whether or not it's going to be an off licence/mobile top up/grocery shop is not clear (I do hope not, we already have enough of all of these!).

However the owners of the new business want to make this much clear:

We hope that the other side of the board is a hint of what's to come...*

Ironically not five minutes after I wrote this post I read this story on SE1 blog which is about local residents protesting against the change of use of some of their shops. In Deptford it's all about betting shops, in The Cut it seems to be about coffee shops; in both cases the arguments are the same, in that locals want a sustainable and diverse range of businesses.

Nice to see that local MP Kate Hoey and local councillors turned out for the protest. Just saying.

(*according to the comments, it's a coffee shop being opened by Kids Love Ink...!)

Thanks Gema, that's great news since the Dame's Demesne is only a hen's hop away!

In the midst of all the betting shop debacle this is wonderful news. Only yesterday I was talking to a local resident berating the fact that the train carriage seems to like to close at 4 on a Saturday (crazy!) leaving nowhere on the high st for a decent cup of coffee.

I popped in yesterday (Sat) morning for a coffee. First time and inspired by this site. Very nice place and staff - will certainly return when I am around that way next time.

Ignore my popped in yesterday post...that was intended for the Deptford Deli!

But what's this...another coffee shop...I love em! Another one to add to the list of places to try! I do hope tattoos are optional for attendance as I am rather unblemished ;-)

I am sorry that the visitor to the deli was unable to get a coffee, the other day. This is because the Deli has changed it's opening hours which the Dame has kindly published. The bonus is that although we close at 4 (wed-Frid) we re-open in the evenings from 6-10 for dinner. Sat 10-10 and Sunday 12-5, so you will now have more hours in fact in which to visit us , only on different days.
We are however closed on Monday and Tuesday. Thank you for your comment.

According to Joan Ruddock's website, there's barely a minute in the day when she isn't busying herself in the Deptford area.

Okay, I made that up. There's quite a lot of blank space on her website, and the latest news was a visit to Lewisham College back on 14th Feb. And we already know how long ago Valentine's Day feels!

Keep up the good community work Joanie!!!!! Hugs!!!

Gareth, if you've concerns about our MP's work I'd recommend you get in touch with her or go to one of her surgeries to discuss it. Perhaps you could ask her directly to get her website updated more often.

@eleanor It's a fair comment by Gareth; I myself am still waiting for a response to a number of emails submitted to our MP via her website. They were submitted several weeks ago and should not have required much research to answer. It's disappointing to say the least.

Bloody marvellous. More places to meet. I happen to know there will also be a pizza coffee place up the other end soon as well, but great that there is somewhere beyond the railway to complement Bear Space, Johnnie's and Rag n'Bone et al. Also as Guru Red says, t'would be a big bonus if they stayed open a bit later. I believe the train carriage might lengthen their hours now it has stopped getting dark at 4pm.

As for Joan, how did that reference get in here? It's true though, and true of our ward councillors also. The silence is deafening. But I'm talking about New Cross Ward, and Kids Love Ink is Evelyn Ward, so apologies for straying from the subject at hand – a new place to meet! Also unblemished (like Anon) apart from the scars of life, I can feel a little bluebird coming on...I know, so cliched...

@ sue I think Gareth was picking up on my comment about the support Kate Hoey is offering her constituents

I remember back in the days of the Revival Cafe, Joan Ruddock poo pooing to me any talk of the forthcoming computer revolution. She was absolutely not interested in internet and all that. She was sort of forced into it eventually when it became mandatory for MP's to have a web site.
She really does think she is better than most other people.
